I met Bob at SCI. He impressed me at once with his knowledge. The longer I knew him, the more I liked him. Knowing Bob enriched my life. Because of him, I got B17 time in my logbook, I learned to oxyacetylene weld ( Not anywhere nearly as well as he could ), and we made many trips to Sewanee just because we could. |

I first met Bob in 1954 when I joined the 822nd Bomb Squadron in Loan France. Bob and I became friendly during my tour of duty there. He loved flying. We started to communicate again when he headed the 38th Bomb Wing Association and found we had many common interest. Most of all I was profoundly touched by Bob’s courage and grace in the face of his adversities and his ability to get on with his life as best he could. May God bless him and keep him and may his face shine on him. John Stafford |

Robin, I never met your dad, and that’s a shame. He must have been a great person. If the measure of a person is the legacy he leaves behind, then your dad did very well. Jeff |

God Bless Bob- met him in Vietnam in 1969 when we were stationed at Phan Rang, Vietnam. He was a Major and I a lowly Lieutenant with 8th TBS flying B-57 aircraft. Bob was the most experienced B-57 pilot in the Squadron. He actually taught the infamous Chuck Yeager how to fly single engine in the B-57. Many were lost trying to land single engine and trying to make single engine go around. He emailed me through the years and told me of his previous tour in B-26s in Vietnam flying for our CIA boys. It was something he couldn’t talk about when he was at Phan Rang in 1969. He relayed many of his stories about his career. Was astonished how much he remembered about the B-26 and B-57 aircraft. He remembered all systems and where every knob was located. Will miss him and will see him in the big sky some day. Bob, rest in peace. Denny Craig |

I did not know Bob well but I know his children and if the quality of a man can be measured, in part at least, by the quality of his children, well, then, Bob was a man of great quality. The following old Norse prayer struck me as something Bob would like: “Lo there do I see my father. Lo there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers. Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me, they bid me take my place among them, in the Halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live…forever”. Old Norse/Warrior Prayer. |

Jack and I shared a major event in all our lives. On 26 Jan 2001 we had a double wedding at the court house. For years after we got together to celebrate the aniversary with champagne and lobster. During the many years of cards and martinis, he left a legacy, he taught me to make his famous (infamous) martini. We toast him whenever we imbibe in one. To a wonderful friend! |

Robin, Sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. I know how important he was to you throughout your life… Our thoughts and prayers to you, and all your family, during this time of grief… Finally your mom and dad are together again… Not the way you want it to happen, I am sure, but there has to be some solace too. Nice to hear that your dad went peacefullly… I want to think he was dreaming about dancing “the skies on laughter-silvered wings”! All our love, Sus and Kathy Susalla |
